WHEN DOES A DAY AND SABBATH BEGIN ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURE? ๐ŸŒ™
Precept upon Precept
Many teach sunrise-to-sunrise. Letโ€™s weigh it by Torah and Prophets, line upon line.
THE DAY
The Hebrew word yom (ื™ื•ื) = day.
Yom can mean the daylight portion, but in Torah it is used for the entire 24-hour cycle.
Genesis 1:5 โ€” โ€œAnd there was evening, and there was morning, one day.โ€
A full yom has two parts:
Evening/nighttime (โ‰ˆ12 hrs, varies with season)
Daylight (โ‰ˆ12 hrs, varies with season)
Days 1โ€“3 existed before the sun was made (Gen. 1:3โ€“19). So โ€œno sun, no dayโ€ is false. The sun rules the day, it does not create the day.
โš”๏ธ A sunrise-to-sunset span is only half a day โ€” not a full yom.
THE SABBATH
Leviticus 23:32 โ€” โ€œFrom evening to evening you shall keep your Sabbath.โ€
This is the command. Yahuโ€™ah sets the boundary at evening.
If Sabbath was sunrise-to-sunrise, this verse would be unnecessary.
PRECEPTS THAT PROVE EVENING BOUNDARIES
Uncleanness resets at evening โ€” Lev. 11:24โ€“28; 15:16; 22:6โ€“7; Deut. 23:11.
Nehemiah 13:19 โ€” Gates closed as it grew dark before the Sabbath. Sabbath began at sundown.
Ezekiel 46:1โ€“3 โ€” Temple gate open for Sabbath worship, not shut until evening. Worship ends when the day ends โ€” at evening.
Mark 1:32 โ€” โ€œAt evening, when the sun had set, they brought the sick to Him.โ€ They waited until Sabbath ended at sundown.
Luke 23:54โ€“56 โ€” โ€œThe Sabbath was beginningโ€ as evening drew on. They rested once the sun went down.
Acts 20:7โ€“11 โ€” The first day began after sundown, and the gathering stretched past midnight.
Exodus 12:6; Lev. 23:5 โ€” Passover lamb slain between the evenings on the 14th, eaten that night. Then the 15th Feast begins. Always evening boundaries.
WORD STUDY
Yom (ื™ื•ื) = day, sometimes daylight, often 24-hr cycle.
Ereb (ืขืจื‘) = evening, sunset, dusk; the mixing. Day divider.
Boqer (ื‘ืงืจ) = morning, dawn; light after night.
Laylah (ืœื™ืœื”) = night.
Genesis defines the cycle: evening + morning = day.
MISUSED TEXTS
John 11:9 โ€” โ€œAre there not 12 hours in the day?โ€ Context = working in daylight vs stumbling at night. It does not redefine the calendar.
Acts 5:21 โ€” They entered the temple โ€œearly in the morningโ€ to teach. This shows when they ministered, not when the day begins.
THE STACK OF WITNESSES
1. Genesis 1 โ€” Evening + morning = day.
2. Lev. 23:32 โ€” Sabbath kept evening to evening.
3. Lev. 11; 15; 22; Deut. 23 โ€” Uncleanness ends at evening.
4. Neh. 13:19 โ€” Gates shut before dark on Sabbath.
5. Ezek. 46 โ€” Gates not shut until evening.
6. Mark 1:32 โ€” People waited till sundown to move.
7. Luke 23:54 โ€” Sabbath โ€œdrawing onโ€ at evening.
8. Acts 20:7 โ€” First day begins after sundown.
9. Exodus 12; Lev. 23 โ€” Passover โ€œbetween the evenings.โ€
All align: day begins and ends at evening.
BOTTOM LINE
A yom is a 24-hour cycle (evening + morning), not daylight only.
Sabbath is evening to evening.
In todayโ€™s calendar: Friday sundown to Saturday sundown.
Sunrise-to-sunrise theology is confusion. Torah, Prophets, Apostles, and Yahuโ€™sha Himself all testify the same: evening is the boundary.
