All Scripture quotations are from The Scriptures 2009 (TS-2009) unless otherwise noted.

The Sin of Mockery

“But you, why do you mock? For are we not tried with fire? Yet we shall all appear before the judgment seat of Messiah.” (Romans 14:10, expounded)

Mocking the Name is treating it with scorn, ridicule, or contempt. It is laughing at what is set-apart, treating the holy as though it were a joke, and deriding the One who gave His covenant Name for salvation. This is not merely an attitude of the world—it is often seen within religion itself, where those who speak the true Name are ridiculed, belittled, or dismissed as “legalists” or “fanatics.”

Mockery is dangerous because it is hardened rebellion disguised as humor or arrogance. To mock His Name is to store up wrath against oneself, for Yahu’ah declares: “Do not be deceived, Elohim is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)

The Witness of Torah and Prophets

  • “Your enemies roar in the midst of Your meeting place; they set up their own signs as signs.” (Psalm 74:4)

  • “They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant. Therefore right-ruling springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.” (Hosea 10:4)

  • “They say to the seers, ‘Do not see,’ and to the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth words, prophesy deceits.’” (Isaiah 30:10)

The prophets saw a people who scoffed at the true Word of Yahu’ah, mocking His Name by despising His covenant and replacing His signs with their own.

The Witness of Yahu’sha

Yahu’sha Himself was mocked before His execution: “And kneeling before Him they mocked Him, saying, ‘Greetings, Sovereign of the Yehuḏim!’ And having spat on Him they took the reed and smote Him on the head.” (Matthew 27:29–30)

By mocking the Son, they mocked the Father whose Name He bore (John 5:43). Their ridicule was not ignorance—it was rejection of His authority. This reveals the seriousness of mockery: it is directed at Yahu’ah Himself through His Name, His Son, and His covenant.

The End-Time Fulfillment

In the last days, mockery rises again: “Knowing this first, that mockers shall come in the last days with mocking, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’” (2 Peter 3:3–4)

The mockers of the end times are not neutral. They are scoffers who deny His promises, ridicule His people, and make light of His warnings. But their laughter will not endure, for His judgment will silence them.

Paleo-Hebrew Word Study

La’ag (לָעַג) — “to mock, deride, scorn.”

  • Paleo-Hebrew: 𐤋𐤏𐤂

  • Lamed (𐤋) = staff, authority, guide

  • Ayin (𐤏) = eye, see, experience

  • Gimel (𐤂) = foot, pride, to lift up or walk

  • Word picture: To lift up the eye in pride against authority, scorning what is set-apart.

  • Insight: Mockery is rebellion seen in the eyes and actions—it lifts itself against the authority of Yahu’ah, scorning His covenant and His people.
