What It Means to Pervert

“You twist the words of the living Elohim, Yahu’ah of hosts, our Elohim.” (Jeremiah 23:36)

To pervert the Name of Yahu’ah is to twist it into something it is not—whether by corrupting its pronunciation, blending it with pagan deities, or attaching it to teachings and practices He never commanded. Perverting His Name is not only about letters or sounds—it is about altering His identity in the minds of His people. When His Name is perverted, His people are led into deception, worshiping a distorted image instead of the true Elohim.

The Witness of the Prophets

  • “For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns that hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

  • “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

  • “Her prophets are reckless, treacherous men; her priests have profaned the set-apart place; they have done violence to the Torah.” (Zephaniah 3:4)

Perverting the Name means redirecting His esteem to emptiness. It is saying “This is Yahu’ah” when it is not, or ascribing His character to idols or falsehood. It is a distortion that empties His people of living water and replaces it with cracked cisterns.

The Witness of Yahu’sha

Yahu’sha condemned the perversion of Yahu’ah’s character through human tradition. “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for you do not go in, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.” (Matthew 23:13)

He also declared: “Many shall come in My Name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they shall lead many astray.” (Matthew 24:5) This is perversion—using His Name while promoting deception. The twisting of His identity is a mark of false teachers and false messiahs.

The End-Time Reality

In the last days, perversion of the Name takes center stage. The beast system is marked by counterfeit worship, where the name of Elohim is blasphemed, and His authority is given to the image of the beast (Revelation 13:6–7, 15). This is the ultimate perversion—taking what belongs to Yahu’ah and redirecting it to the beast.

But the remnant is not deceived. They stand on Mount Tsiyon with the Lamb, bearing the true Name of the Father (Revelation 14:1). The great divide of the last days will be between those who follow the perverted name and those who cling to the true.

Paleo-Hebrew Word Study

Avah (עָוָה) — “to twist, pervert, distort.”

  • Paleo-Hebrew: 𐤏𐤅𐤄

  • Ayin (𐤏) = eye, see, experience

  • Waw (𐤅) = hook, secure, add

  • He (𐤄) = breath, behold, reveal

  • Word picture: The eye is hooked into what is revealed, but twisted and distorted.

  • Insight: Perverting the Name means people see and experience something, but it is a distorted picture of Yahu’ah. Instead of His true esteem, they behold a twisted imitation.
