THE FATHER AND THE SON
PART 10 — THE RUACH HAKODESH
Understanding the Spirit of Yahuah and the Spirit of Messiah Through the Whole Counsel of Elohim
Throughout this series we have carefully examined the relationship between the Father and the Son. We have seen that the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Father, yet They are perfectly united in purpose, truth, glory, authority, love, and Kingdom. At this point another question naturally arises.
What about the Ruach HaKodesh?
Many theological systems have attempted to define the Ruach according to philosophical categories rather than allowing the Scriptures to reveal who and what the Ruach is. As with the Father and the Son, our responsibility is not to force the text into a predetermined system but to allow the whole counsel of Elohim to speak.
The first thing we discover is that the Ruach HaKodesh is never presented as acting independently from the Father or independently from the Son. Rather, the Ruach continually reveals, glorifies, empowers, teaches, comforts, convicts, equips, and accomplishes the Father’s will through the Son.
From the opening verses of Bereshith, we encounter the Ruach of Elohim.
“And the Spirit of Elohim was moving upon the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)
Notice the language.
The Scriptures call Him the Spirit of Elohim.
Not another Elohim.
Not a separate deity.
The Spirit of Elohim.
Throughout the Tanakh this pattern remains remarkably consistent.
The Ruach comes upon prophets.
The Ruach empowers judges.
The Ruach strengthens kings.
The Ruach equips craftsmen.
The Ruach gives wisdom.
The Ruach reveals truth.
The Ruach empowers obedience.
The Ruach is consistently presented as the active presence and power of Yahuah accomplishing His purposes among His people.
David prayed,
“Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Set-Apart Spirit from me.” (Psalm 51:11)
Isaiah wrote,
“They rebelled and grieved His Set-Apart Spirit.” (Isaiah 63:10)
Again…
His Spirit.
His Set-Apart Spirit.
The relationship remains consistent.
When we arrive at the Apostolic Witness, the same testimony continues.
The angel tells Miriam,
“The Ruach HaKodesh shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35)
The Spirit operates in perfect harmony with the Father.
At Yahusha’s baptism, the same beautiful order appears once again.
The Son stands in the Jordan.
The Ruach descends like a dove.
The Father speaks from heaven.
(Matthew 3:16–17)
This scene beautifully demonstrates harmony without confusion.
The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Ruach.
The Ruach is not the Father’s voice.
Yet all three participate in the inauguration of Messiah’s earthly ministry.
During Yahusha’s ministry He repeatedly teaches concerning the coming of the Ruach.
“But the Helper, the Ruach HaKodesh, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all and remind you of all that I said to you.” (John 14:26)
Notice the order.
The Father sends.
The Ruach comes.
He comes in Yahusha’s Name.
The mission remains centered upon the Father and the Son.
Later Yahusha says,
“When the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He shall bear witness concerning Me.” (John 15:26)
Again…
The Father is the source.
The Son sends.
The Ruach proceeds from the Father.
The Ruach bears witness concerning the Son.
Perfect harmony.
Perfect order.
Perfect unity.
John 16 expands this even further.
“When He comes, the Spirit of truth, He shall guide you into all truth… for He shall not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears He shall speak… He shall esteem Me, for He shall take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13–14)
These verses are extremely important.
The Ruach does not glorify Himself.
He glorifies Yahusha.
He does not establish an independent ministry.
He reveals the Son.
The Son reveals the Father.
Everything moves toward the glory of Yahuah.
Paul continues this same testimony.
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of Elohim dwells in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Messiah, he is not His.” (Romans 8:9)
Notice the language.
Spirit of Elohim.
Spirit of Messiah.
Paul uses both expressions because the work of the Father and the Son is perfectly united through the Ruach.
There is no contradiction.
The same chapter continues,
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of Elohim.” (Romans 8:16)
The Ruach points us to the Father.
He bears witness concerning the Son.
He confirms our adoption.
Everything He does advances the Father’s Kingdom.
The Scriptures therefore present the Ruach as the active working of Elohim among His people.
He convicts.
He teaches.
He empowers.
He sanctifies.
He equips.
He comforts.
He leads.
He reveals.
He never draws attention away from the Father.
He never glorifies Himself.
He continually glorifies Yahusha, who continually glorifies the Father.
This is covenant harmony.
Unfortunately, many debates begin by asking questions the Scriptures themselves never ask.
People often ask,
“How many persons are there?”
“What is the metaphysical relationship?”
“What philosophical category best explains the Spirit?”
The Scriptures ask a different question.
How does the Ruach work?
What does the Ruach reveal?
Who does the Ruach glorify?
How does the Ruach accomplish the Father’s will?
Those are biblical questions.
Those are Hebraic questions.
This does not diminish the Ruach.
It magnifies His ministry.
He is the Spirit of truth.
The Spirit of Elohim.
The Spirit of Messiah.
The One who dwells within believers.
The One who writes the Torah upon our hearts.
The One who transforms us into the image of Messiah.
The One who prepares the Bride for the coming Kingdom.
The same covenant order we have observed throughout this series remains perfectly intact.
The Father purposes.
The Son accomplishes.
The Ruach empowers.
The Kingdom advances.
Everything returns to the glory of Yahuah.
The Four Witnesses never contradict one another.
They reveal one Elohim.
One eternal purpose.
One covenant.
One Kingdom.
One Father.
One Son.
One Ruach HaKodesh.
Perfectly united.
Perfectly harmonious.
Perfectly revealing the wisdom, love, power, and glory of Elohim from Genesis to Revelation.
That is the testimony of the whole counsel of Elohim.
