  3. Righteousness and Lawlessness: Rediscovering the Path of True Obedience

Have you ever wondered why there seems to be so much confusion about righteousness and the Law of Elohim? Why do some believers insist the Torah has been abolished while others hold fast to its instructions? The answer lies in understanding Scripture as a whole, without pulling verses out of context. Itโ€™s time to uncover what righteousness and lawlessness really mean, from the foundation of the Torah to the teachings of Yโ€™shuโ€™ah HaMashiach and the writings of the apostles. Youโ€™ve probably heard it before: โ€œWeโ€™re not under the Law anymore, weโ€™re under grace.โ€ย Itโ€™s a common phrase, often tossed around as a quick explanation for why believers no longer have to follow the commandments of Elohimโ€”His Torah. But have you ever paused to consider what that really means? Did Yahuah, who gave us His perfect instructions, suddenly change His mind? Did Yโ€™shuโ€™ah HaMashiach (Jesus) come to deliver us from obedience to Yahuah, or to show us how to live it out perfectly?

ย

This isnโ€™t about debating opinions; itโ€™s about returning to what the Word of Yahuah actually says. Weโ€™ll look at how Paulโ€™s words have been misunderstood, how Yโ€™shuโ€™ah exemplified obedience, and why lawlessness remains a dangerous deception. Letโ€™s take our time and explore this deeplyโ€”after all, our understanding of righteousness is critical to our walk with Yahuah.

Letโ€™s dig into this topic together, not brushing past the surface but diving deep. When we do, weโ€™ll see that righteousness and lawlessnessย are as clear as day and night, and Yahuahโ€™s Word leaves no room for confusion.

“Not Under the Law” โ€“ What Did Paul Really Mean?

Ah, the famous statement: โ€œYou are not under the law but under graceโ€ย (Romans 6:14). This phrase has been used over and over again to argue that Yahuahโ€™s Torah (Law) has been done away with. But is that what Paul really meant? Not at all.

Letโ€™s break this down. First, Paul says, โ€œSin shall not be master over you.โ€ย What is sin? Itโ€™s crucial to define this because if we misunderstand sin, weโ€™ll misunderstand Paulโ€™s entire argument. When Paul wrote, โ€œFor sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under graceโ€ย (Romans 6:14) or โ€œIf you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the lawโ€ย (Galatians 5:18), he wasnโ€™t tossing out Yahuahโ€™s Torah. Not even close. In fact, he was pointing to a deeper truth about sin, grace, and what it means to walk in the Spirit.

First, we have to ask: What is sin?

The Bible defines sin plainly in 1 John 3:4: โ€œWhoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.โ€

In other words, sin is breaking the Torahโ€”Yahuahโ€™s instructions. Thatโ€™s the biblical definition. So when Paul says we are โ€œnot under the law,โ€ heโ€™s not saying we are free to sin. Instead, he means that we are no longer under the penalty of the Lawโ€”the condemnation that comes when we break it.

Think about it this way: If you obey the speed limit, youโ€™re not โ€œunder the lawโ€ because you arenโ€™t subject to its penalties. But if you speed and get caught, you are under the lawโ€”you face its consequences.

Paul clarifies this immediately in Romans 6:15-16:

โ€œWhat then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Elohim forbid! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that oneโ€™s slaves whom you obeyโ€”whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?โ€

Hereโ€™s the key: Grace doesnโ€™t free us from obedience. Grace frees us from condemnationย so we can walk in obedience. This is a massive difference. Grace doesnโ€™t give us permission to ignore Yahuahโ€™s instructions; it empowers us to live according to them.

Cross References:

  • Romans 3:31: โ€œDo we then nullify the Torah through faith? Elohim forbid! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.โ€

  • James 2:17-18: โ€œFaith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead… I will show you my faith by my works.โ€

Paul is not arguing against the Torah; he is showing us the role of grace in freeing us from sin and empowering us to walk righteously.

Think of it like this: If youโ€™re driving the speed limit, are you worried about being pulled over and fined? Of course not. Youโ€™re not โ€œunder the lawโ€ because youโ€™re walking in obedience to it. But if you break the speed limit, youโ€™re under the authority of the law and subject to its penalties.

Paul explains it further in Romans 6:15-16:

โ€œWhat then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that oneโ€™s slaves whom you obeyโ€”whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?โ€

See the contrast? Grace doesnโ€™t make lawlessness acceptable. Grace empowers us to walk in obedience. Grace frees us from the penaltyย of sin so that we can walk in Yahuahโ€™s righteousness.

Cross References:

  • Romans 3:31: โ€œDo we then nullify the Torah through faith? Elohim forbid! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.โ€

  • James 2:17: โ€œFaith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.โ€

True faith leads to obedience. Paul wasnโ€™t abolishing the Torahโ€”he was restoring it to its rightful place as a guide for righteous living.

Sin and Righteousness: Two Opposing Paths

Now, if sin is lawlessness (breaking the Torah), then righteousness must be the opposite: obedience to Yahuahโ€™s instructions. This isnโ€™t my opinionโ€”itโ€™s what the Bible says. Scripture makes this connection repeatedly, showing that righteousness is not some abstract idea but a life lived according to Yahuahโ€™s instructions.

  • Deuteronomy 6:25: โ€œThen it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before Yahuah our Elohim, as He has commanded us.โ€

Do you see that? Obedience to Yahuahโ€™s commandmentsโ€”His Torahโ€”is the very definition of righteousness. Itโ€™s not about earning salvation but about walking in alignment with theย path and will of Elohim.

Yโ€™shuโ€™ah affirmed this truth over and over:

  • John 14:15: โ€œIf you love Me, keep My commandments.โ€

  • Matthew 5:17-18: โ€œDo not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the Torah till all is fulfilled.โ€

Now letโ€™s pause here. What does โ€œfulfillโ€ mean? In the Hebraic context, to โ€œfulfillโ€ (plฤ“roล) means to bring to fullness or to live out perfectly. Yโ€™shuโ€™ah did not abolish the Torahโ€”He embodied itย and showed us how to follow it in spirit and truth. Yโ€™shuโ€™ahโ€™s message was not one of abolishing the Torah but of living it out fully, showing us what it looks like to walk in righteousness.

Cross References:

  • Psalm 119:142: โ€œYour righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your Torah is truth.โ€

  • Isaiah 42:21: โ€œYahuah is well pleased for His righteousnessโ€™ sake; He will exalt the Torah and make it honorable.โ€

The Torah is Yahuahโ€™s standard for righteousness, and it hasnโ€™t changed. It was given to guide us into a life of blessing, not to burden us with legalism. Righteousness is rooted in obedience to Yahuahโ€™s Torah, which is eternal and unchanging.

The Spirit of Elohim and the New Covenant

Hereโ€™s where it getsย exciting and even better. Under the New Covenant, Yahuah didnโ€™t do away with the Torah. Instead, He promised to write it on our hearts and empower us to walk in it by His Spirit.

  • Ezekiel 36:27: โ€œI will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.โ€

  • Jeremiah 31:33: โ€œI will put My Torah in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.โ€

This changes everything. The Spirit of Elohim doesnโ€™t lead us awayย from the Torah but towardย it. Walking โ€œin the Spiritโ€ means walking in obedience to Yahuahโ€™s instructions, not against them.Isnโ€™t that amazing? The Spirit of Elohim doesnโ€™t lead us away fromย the Torah but toward obedience. Walking in the Spirit and obeying the Torah are not oppositesโ€”theyโ€™re intertwined.

So, when Paul says, โ€œIf you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Lawโ€ย (Galatians 5:18), heโ€™s not saying the Torah is irrelevant. Heโ€™s saying that those who are led by the Spirit are walking in obedience to Yahuahโ€™s ways, and therefore, they are not under its condemnation.

Cross References:

  • Romans 8:4: โ€œThat the righteous requirement of the Torah might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.โ€

  • Psalm 119:105: โ€œYour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.โ€

The Spirit leads us back to Yahuahโ€™s Word, which is His Torah.

The First Sin: A Lesson in Lawlessness

Itโ€™s fascinatingโ€”and soberingโ€”ย From the very beginning, lawlessnessโ€”rejecting Yahuahโ€™s instructionsโ€”was the root of sin to realize that the first act of sin in the Bible was an act of lawlessness.

  • Genesis 2:16-17: โ€œAnd Yahuah Elohim commanded the man, saying, โ€˜Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.โ€™โ€

What did the serpent say?

  • Genesis 3:1: โ€œHas Elohim indeed said…?โ€

Sound familiar? The same lie is still whispered today: โ€œDid Elohim really say you have to follow His commandments?โ€

Adam and Eve believed the lie, disobeyed Yahuahโ€™s command, and introduced death into the world. It all began with rejecting Yahuahโ€™s instructionsโ€”lawlessness.

  • Romans 5:19: โ€œFor as by one manโ€™s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Manโ€™s obedience many will be made righteous.โ€

Yโ€™shuโ€™ah, the second Adam, reversed this curse by walking in perfect obedience to the Torah.

The Modern Deception: Lawlessness in Disguise

Today, many believers dismiss Yahuahโ€™s commandments as โ€œoldโ€, โ€œirrelevant,โ€ or โ€œdone away with.โ€ But who do you think is behind that deceptionโ€”the Righteous One or the Lawless One?

  • The Sabbath Day: Many say it doesnโ€™t matter when you rest, even though Yahuah sanctified the seventh day (Genesis 2:3, Exodus 20:8-11).

  • The dietary instructions: People argue that the food laws in Leviticus 11ย no longer apply, even though Yahuah calls them โ€œcleanโ€ and โ€œunclean.โ€

  • Godโ€™s Feasts: Replaced by man-made holidays like Christmas and Easter.

  • Tattoos: Celebrated, despite Leviticus 19:28ย forbidding them.

Each of these examples points back to the same issue: rejection of Yahuahโ€™s instructions. Lawlessness dressed up as freedom.

Conclusion: Return to Obedience

At the end of the day, this is about more than rules or regulations. Itโ€™s about relationship. Yahuah gave His Torah as a giftโ€”a blueprint for righteous living, a way to draw close to Him. Rejecting it is not freedom; itโ€™s lawlessness.

  • Revelation 14:12: โ€œHere is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of Elohim and the faith of Yโ€™shuโ€™ah.โ€

Which path will you choose? Will you follow the Lawless One into rebellion, or will you follow Yโ€™shuโ€™ah into righteousness and life?

The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
