The Sabbath, a day of rest and worship, is a concept that predates any man-made calendar. It was established in the book of Genesis, long before the creation of the modern calendar.
Today, the world primarily follows the Gregorian calendar, and the biblical Sabbath is observed from Friday evening to Saturday evening. However, the specific day of the week on which the Sabbath falls in the modern calendar is not of primary importance. The essence of the Sabbath lies in its observance as a day of rest, not in its alignment with the days of the week as we know them today.
On March 7, 321, Roman Emperor Constantine I issued a decree making Sunday a day of rest. This decree mandated the closure of all workshops and prohibited labor by city people, judges, and craftsmen. This historical event, documented in the Codex Justinianus and translated in Philip Schaff’s “History of the Christian Church,” marked a significant shift in the observance of a weekly day of rest.
In over thirty languages, the name for Saturday is a cognate of “Sabbath,” providing further evidence for the seven-day weekly Sabbath cycle that currently runs from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. This linguistic evidence strengthens the foundation of the Sabbath as a universal concept.
While some cultures may have used the moon to reset their weekly cycle of seven days, it’s unclear whether this practice was correct or aligned with the biblical concept of the Sabbath. For instance, the Chinese, who have the same seven-day week and had no contact with Roman culture or Pope Gregory’s calendar reform in 1582, observe a continuous seven-day cycle that is not affected by lunar phases.
To further elaborate on the biblical references to the Sabbath, here are a few key verses: • Exodus 20:8-11: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
• Ezekiel 20:19-20: “I am the Lord your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.”
• Mark 2:27-28: “Then he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’”
These verses emphasize the importance of the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship, a sign of the covenant between God and His people, and a blessing given by God for the benefit of mankind. They underscore the significance of the Sabbath in biblical teachings and its enduring relevance today.
