Introduction: The Authority Question
The issue is not whether 1 Enoch is ancient.
The issue is not whether some Second Temple groups used a 364-day calendar.
The issue is authority.
If a calendar binds covenant obedience, it must be established in Torah. Not in later apocalyptic literature. Not in sectarian manuscripts. Not in speculative tradition.
Timekeeping in Scripture governs:
โข Moedim (appointed times)
โข Passover
โข Unleavened Bread
โข Shavuot
โข Yom Teruah
โข Yom Kippur
โข Sukkot
If you alter the calendar, you alter obedience.
If you alter obedience, you alter covenant fidelity.
This is not a minor detail.
What 1 Enoch Actually Teaches
1 Enoch 75โ82 describes:
โข A schematic 364-day year
โข 12 months of 30 days (360)
โข 4 intercalary days dividing the four quarters
โข Solar portal movement
โข Fixed stations
Jubilees 6:32 commands Israel to observe a 364-day year.
There is no debate about what those passages say.
The debate is whether they carry Torah authority.
The Mathematical Problem
A fixed 364-day solar year is 1.2422 days shorter than the true solar year (~365.2422).
That means:
โข It drifts more than one day every year
โข It is off by an entire week in less than 6 years
โข It is off by a month within a generation
โข It collapses agriculturally without correction
And 1 Enoch does not provide a functional astronomical correction system.
A calendar that drifts away from the agricultural cycle cannot preserve Passover in spring (Deuteronomy 16:1).
Torah ties the calendar to observable reality:
โข Aviv barley (Exodus 12:2; 13:4)
โข Agricultural cycles (Exodus 23:16)
โข The moon for appointed times (Psalm 104:19)
A fixed schematic system detached from agricultural observation conflicts with Torahโs agricultural anchoring.
Torahโs Calendar Framework
Torah establishes:
Months begin with a new moon cycle (Exodus 12:2 implied; Psalm 104:19).
Passover must occur in Aviv โ the stage of barley (Deuteronomy 16:1).
Feasts are agriculturally anchored.
Torah never commands:
โข A 364-day year
โข Solar portal divisions
โข Fixed quarter intercalations
โข A non-lunar structure
If it is not commanded in Torah, it cannot override Torah.
The Authority Problem of 1 Enoch
Now we must address the larger issue.
1. Authorship
1 Enoch is pseudepigraphal.
It claims authorship by Enoch (Genesis 5) but was written centuries later (likely 3rdโ1st century BCE).
That alone removes Mosaic-level authority.
2. Canonical Status
โข It is not part of the Hebrew canon.
โข It was not accepted into the Tanakh.
โข It was rejected by Rabbinic Judaism.
โข It was not universally accepted in early Christian canon formation.
Its canonical status has always been disputed.
3. Textual Transmission
โข Survives primarily in Ethiopic manuscripts.
โข Greek and Aramaic fragments are incomplete.
โข Multiple versions with variations.
That makes accuracy and stability uncertain.
4. Theological Issues
1 Enoch contains:
โข Elaborate angelic hierarchies
โข Cosmological structures not found in Torah
โข Speculative astronomical frameworks
โข Apocalyptic expansions beyond Mosaic revelation
If any text expands beyond Torahโs direct instruction, it cannot become binding covenant law.
Deuteronomy 4:2 โ The Covenant Boundary
โYou shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it.โ
If Torah does not command a 364-day fixed solar year, but one binds it as covenant requirement โ that is adding.
And if adding changes how the moedim are observed โ that is subtracting from what Torah actually requires.
You cannot:
โข Replace lunar observation with schematic solar portals
โข Remove agricultural anchoring
โข Bind Israel to a non-Torah system
And claim covenant obedience.
That is alteration.
Historical Use Is Not Covenant Authority
Yes โ the Qumran community likely used a 364-day calendar.
But sectarian use does not equal divine mandate.
Ancient does not equal authoritative.
Popular does not equal commanded.
Only Torah commands covenant obedience.
The Real Danger
The real danger is not academic debate.
The real danger is elevating extra-biblical literature above Torah.
Once you allow:
โข Enoch to define time
โข Jubilees to redefine reckoning
โข Sectarian manuscripts to override Sinai
You have shifted the covenant foundation.
And if your calendar shifts, your feasts shift.
If your feasts shift, your obedience shifts.
If your obedience shifts, your alignment shifts.
This is not minor.
Prophetic Consistency
Prophetic Scripture aligns with Torahโs agricultural, observable pattern.
Ezekiel 45โ46, Zechariah 14, and other prophetic texts maintain feast structures tied to Israelโs land and seasons.
They do not reference:
โข Solar portal reckoning
โข A fixed 364-day schema
The prophets operate within Torahโs framework.
Final Conclusion
1 Enoch may be:
โข Historically interesting
โข Apocalyptically influential
โข Ancient literature
But it is not:
โข Mosaic revelation
โข Canonical Torah
โข Covenant law
โข Authoritative over Sinai
A calendar that Torah does not command cannot become binding.
Adding it is adding.
Replacing Torahโs structure is subtracting.
The covenant foundation is Torah.
Everything must be measured by it.
If it is not commanded at Sinai, it does not bind covenant obedience.
Guard the foundation.
Do not elevate secondary literature above primary revelation.
The spine of Scripture is Torah.
Everything else must align with it โ not override it.
