AGAINST THE LAW — PART 17: “MESSIAH IS THE END OF THE LAW” — END AS TERMINATION OR GOAL?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Now we come to one of the most quoted verses used to claim that the law has been ended:
“For Messiah is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” (Romans 10:4)
This is where people say:
“The law is over.”
“Messiah terminated the law.”
“We are past that system.”
That is the claim.
But that is not what Paul is saying.
And this time, the entire argument hinges on one word:
“end.”
If that word is misunderstood, the entire verse is misread.
So we are going to slow it down, define it precisely, anchor it in context, and remove every place this argument hides.
DEFINE “END” CORRECTLY — THE GREEK WORD TELOS
The word translated “end” is the Greek telos.
This word does not automatically mean termination.
It carries a range of meaning:
Goal
Aim
Purpose
Outcome
Destination
Consummation
Completion in the sense of reaching its intended point
Yes, in some contexts it can refer to an ending point—but language is not defined by what a word can mean in isolation. It is defined by what it must mean in context.
So the real question is:
What meaning of telos fits Paul’s argument in Romans 9–10?
TERMINATION VS GOAL — THIS IS THE ENTIRE ISSUE
We must make the distinction clearly:
Termination means something is abolished, removed, no longer valid.
Goal means something has reached the point it was always moving toward.
Those are not the same thing.
If a road ends at a city, the road is not destroyed.
It has reached its destination.
If a blueprint leads to a building, the blueprint is not invalid.
It has been realized.
That is how telos functions here.
THE VERSE ITSELF LIMITS THE MEANING
Read it carefully:
“Messiah is the end of the law for righteousness…”
This is not a blanket statement about abolishing Torah.
It is a specific statement about:
How righteousness is attained.
That phrase governs the entire meaning.
CONTEXT — ROMANS 9:30–33 AND 10:1–3
Paul is not discussing whether the law exists.
He is addressing why Israel failed to attain righteousness.
“Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained… because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were by works.” (Romans 9:31–32)
“They sought to establish their own righteousness…” (Romans 10:3)
That is the issue.
Not the law.
The misuse of the law for self-justification.
PAUL’S ARGUMENT — RIGHTEOUSNESS, NOT ABOLITION
Romans 10:4 answers the problem Paul just raised:
How does one actually attain righteousness?
His answer is not:
“The law is abolished.”
His answer is:
Messiah is where the law was always leading you in regard to righteousness.
That is telos.
THE LAW WAS NEVER A LADDER — IT WAS A WITNESS
This must be stated plainly.
The law was never given as a ladder for man to climb into righteousness.
It was given as:
A definition of righteousness
A revealer of sin
A witness pointing beyond the sinner
So the structure is:
Law reveals righteousness
Man misuses it for self-justification
Messiah embodies true righteousness
Faith unites you to Him
ROMANS 3:21 — THIS CONFIRMS THE SAME STRUCTURE
“But now the righteousness of Elohim apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets…”
Notice:
Righteousness is revealed apart from the law as a means of justification
But the Law and the Prophets still witness to it
That means:
The law is not discarded.
It is testifying.
PHILIPPIANS 3 — PAUL SAYS THE SAME THING AGAIN
Paul rejects:
“Having my own righteousness, which is from the law…”
And embraces:
“That which is through faith in Messiah…”
Again:
Not anti-law.
Anti-self-righteousness.
IF “END” MEANS TERMINATION — THE VERSE COLLAPSES
Let’s apply the wrong definition:
“Messiah terminated the law for righteousness…”
Then what defines righteousness now?
If the law is gone:
Righteousness is undefined
Sin is undefined
Obedience is undefined
That destroys the entire framework of Scripture.
So telos cannot mean termination here.
MESSIAH IS THE GOAL OF THE LAW FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
This is the correct reading:
The law defines righteousness
Messiah embodies that righteousness
Faith brings you into Him
The Spirit empowers you to walk in it
So Messiah is:
The goal
The aim
The destination
Of what the law was always pointing toward in righteousness.
THE LAW IS VALIDATED — NOT VOIDED
When the destination is reached:
The path is not condemned.
It is confirmed.
The law is not rendered false because it leads to Messiah.
It is proven true.
PAUL DOES NOT CONTRADICT HIMSELF
The same Paul says:
“We establish the law.” (Romans 3:31)
“The law is holy…” (Romans 7:12)
So if Romans 10:4 is read as abolition—
Paul is contradicting himself in the same letter.
That is not a problem with Paul.
That is a problem with the interpretation.
RIGHTEOUSNESS STILL EXISTS — SO THE LAW STILL DEFINES IT
Scripture continues to speak about:
Righteousness
Sin
Obedience
Judgment
Those categories require definition.
The law provides that definition.
So it cannot be gone.
THE REAL ISSUE — MISUSE VS ALIGNMENT
Paul is not tearing down Torah.
He is tearing down:
Self-righteousness
Works-based justification
Prideful misuse of the law
That is what Romans 10 is about.
PEOPLE WANT TERMINATION — NOT TRANSFORMATION
Let’s be direct.
People prefer “termination” because it removes accountability.
They want Messiah to excuse them from the standard—
Not bring them into alignment with it.
But that is not what Paul is teaching.
COMMON SENSE TEST — AGAIN
If a road leads to a city—
Does the city destroy the road?
No.
The road has fulfilled its purpose by bringing you there.
FULL STRUCTURE — LOCK THIS IN
Law reveals righteousness
Man misuses law
Messiah embodies righteousness
Faith receives righteousness
Spirit empowers obedience
Law remains as defined standard
FINAL HAMMER — NO ESCAPE
“Messiah is the end of the law” does not mean:
Messiah terminated the law.
It means:
Messiah is the goal, the aim, the destination, and the full expression of what the law was always pointing toward in righteousness.
The law is not canceled.
It is confirmed.
And if you use Romans 10:4 to argue that the law has ended—
You are not following Paul’s argument.
You are redefining one word and forcing it to contradict everything else he wrote.
Messiah is not the destruction of righteousness.
He is its embodiment.
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
