AGAINST THE LAW — PART 11: COLOSSIANS 2:14–17 — WHAT WAS NAILED TO THE STAKE?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Now we come to one of the most quoted—and most distorted—passages used to argue that the law has been done away with:
Colossians 2:14–17
This is where people say:
“The law was nailed to the cross.”
“The commandments were abolished.”
“The Sabbath and the feasts are gone.”
That is the claim.
But that is not what the text says.
And once again—the entire argument depends on reading assumptions into the text instead of reading what is actually written.
So we are going to slow this down, define every term, and remove every place to hide.
WHAT DOES THE TEXT ACTUALLY SAY?
“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to the stake.” (Colossians 2:14)
Read it exactly as written.
It does not say:
The law was nailed to the stake.
It says:
“The handwriting of ordinances that was against us…”
Everything hinges on defining that phrase correctly.
THE GREEK TERM — CHEIROGRAPHON (LEGAL DEBT LANGUAGE)
The word translated “handwriting” is the Greek cheirographon.
It refers to:
A handwritten record of debt
A certificate of indebtedness
A legal document listing charges owed
This is courtroom language.
This is not the law itself.
This is a record of violations of the law.
“ORDINANCES” — DOGMASIN (DECREES APPLIED AGAINST YOU)
The term dogmasin refers to:
Legal decrees
Judicial rulings
Charges enforced against someone
Not the eternal standard itself—
But the application of that standard against a guilty person.
So the phrase becomes clear:
A written record of charges standing against you.
THE CRITICAL DISTINCTION — LAW VS RECORD
This must be locked in permanently:
The law defines what is right.
The record defines how you violated what is right.
The law is the standard.
The record is your failure to meet it.
So what is being removed?
Not the definition—
The documentation of your violation.
“BLOTTING OUT” — WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
“Blotting out” means:
To erase
To wipe clean
To remove from record
Not to destroy the standard.
The law remains.
The record is erased.
WHAT WAS “AGAINST US”?
The law is not against you.
The law is righteous.
What is against you is:
Your guilt
Your debt
Your record of transgression
The problem is not the standard.
The problem is your standing before it.
WHAT WAS NAILED TO THE STAKE?
Not the law.
Not righteousness.
Not the commandments.
What was nailed to the stake was:
The record of your violations
The certificate of your debt
The legal indictment against you
This is not moral abolition.
This is legal cancellation.
DEBT LANGUAGE — THIS IS ABOUT PAYMENT
This passage is not about removing law.
It is about canceling debt.
The law reveals the debt.
Your sin creates the record.
Messiah pays it.
The record is cleared.
That is what is happening here.
THE ACCUSER LOSES HIS LEGAL GROUND
Scripture calls the adversary:
“The accuser of our brethren…” (Revelation 12:10)
What does the accuser use?
Your record.
Your violations.
Your guilt.
When Messiah removes the record—
He removes the legal ground for accusation.
Not the law itself—
The accusation built upon your violation of it.
THIS CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO “NO CONDEMNATION”
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Messiah…” (Romans 8:1)
Why?
Because the record of charges has been removed.
Not because the law disappeared.
Condemnation is gone.
Righteousness remains.
IF THE LAW WAS NAILED — RIGHTEOUSNESS WAS NAILED
Push the logic to its conclusion:
If the law was nailed to the stake—
Then righteousness was nailed to the stake.
If righteousness is gone—
Nothing is sin.
If nothing is sin—
There is no need for forgiveness.
If there is no need for forgiveness—
The cross has no purpose.
That argument destroys itself.
PAUL DOES NOT CONTRADICT HIMSELF
Paul says:
“The law is holy…” (Romans 7:12)
“We establish the law…” (Romans 3:31)
So he cannot also mean:
“The law was nailed to the cross.”
That is not a tension.
That is a misinterpretation.
EPHESIANS 2 — WHAT WAS ACTUALLY REMOVED
“Having abolished… the law of commandments contained in ordinances…” (Ephesians 2:15)
This is not the removal of righteousness.
It is the removal of:
Hostility
Separation
Legal accusation
Dividing barriers
The enmity created by violation—
Not the standard itself.
“LET NO MAN JUDGE YOU” — DEFINE IT CORRECTLY
“Let no one judge you in food or drink, or regarding a festival, new moon, or Sabbaths…” (Colossians 2:16)
This does not say:
“These things don’t matter.”
It says:
Do not let others judge you.
The issue is not observance.
The issue is who has authority to condemn you.
WHO WAS DOING THE JUDGING?
Ascetic teachers
Man-made religious systems
False authorities imposing extra standards
Paul is not rejecting Torah.
He is rejecting:
Human judgment
Legalistic control
Extra-biblical requirements
THE SHADOW LANGUAGE — FULLY SEALED
“…which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Messiah.” (Colossians 2:17)
Notice carefully:
It does not say “were a shadow.”
It says “are a shadow of things to come.”
Future.
That means:
These things still point forward.
They are not obsolete.
WHAT IS A SHADOW?
A shadow:
Points to something real
Reveals something greater
Does not eliminate the substance
The Sabbath
The feasts
The appointed times
They reveal Messiah.
They are not erased.
They are understood more fully.
JUDGMENT STILL EXISTS — SO THE LAW STILL EXISTS
Scripture still speaks of future judgment.
Judgment requires:
A standard
A definition
A measure of righteousness
That standard is the law.
If the law were gone—
Judgment would be impossible.
THE FINAL CONTRADICTION — NO ESCAPE
If the law was nailed to the stake:
Sin ended at the cross
If sin ended, forgiveness ended
If forgiveness ended, grace is meaningless
If grace is meaningless, the cross has no purpose
That system collapses completely.
COMMON SENSE TEST — AGAIN
If your criminal record is erased—
Does that mean the law is gone?
No.
It means your violations are no longer held against you.
That is exactly what this passage is saying.
FULL STRUCTURE — LOCK THIS IN
Law defines
Sin violates
Record accumulates
Debt stands
Accuser condemns
Messiah cancels record
Grace restores
Obedience continues
FINAL HAMMER — NO ESCAPE
The law was not nailed to the stake.
Your debt was nailed to the stake.
The law still defines.
The Spirit still leads.
Righteousness still stands.
The accusation has been removed.
The record has been erased.
And if you claim the law is gone—
You are not removing the standard.
You are removing your accountability to it.
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
