AGAINST THE LAW — PART 1: WHAT IS THE LAW?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Let’s stop the confusion right at the beginning.
Before you can argue “the law is done away with,” you have to answer a much simpler question:
What is the law?
Because most of the arguments people make are not against what Scripture actually defines—they are against a misunderstanding, a distortion, or a caricature.
The law is not a random list of rules.
It is not man-made religion.
It is not legalism.
The law is Yahuah’s instruction—His revealed standard of righteousness.
That’s why Scripture says:
“The law of Yahuah is perfect, restoring the soul.” (Psalm 19:7)
“All Your commandments are righteousness.” (Psalm 119:172)
That’s not language used for something temporary, flawed, or disposable.
That is language describing something that reflects His nature.
Now this is where the entire argument begins to collapse.
Because if the law reflects Yahuah—then removing the law is not a small theological adjustment.
It is a claim about Him.
Scripture says:
“I am Yahuah, I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)
So if His nature does not change, then His definition of righteousness does not change.
Which means His standard does not change.
Which means the law—properly understood—is not external to Him.
It flows from Him.
So when someone says “the law is done away with,” what they are actually saying—whether they realize it or not—is:
Yahuah’s standard has changed.
That is not a small claim.
That is a foundational contradiction.
Now we need to establish something that most people have never been taught correctly:
The law did not begin at Sinai.
Sinai did not create the law.
Sinai revealed it, declared it, and wrote it—but it did not originate it.
How do we know this?
Because sin existed before Sinai.
Cain is judged for murder (Genesis 4).
The world is judged for corruption (Genesis 6).
The adversary fell before man.
Judgment requires a standard.
You cannot be guilty where there is no law.
So the structure is clear:
The law existed before it was written.
It was revealed—not created—at Sinai.
That alone destroys the idea that the law is limited to a temporary covenant system.
Now define this clearly, because if you don’t, people will try to escape into confusion later.
Scripture presents two categories people constantly mix:
There is righteousness defined by Yahuah—moral, unchanging, rooted in His nature.
And there is covenant administration—priesthood, sacrifices, temple systems, which were instructional and temporary in function.
If you do not distinguish these, you will either: Throw everything out (lawlessness),
Or force everything unchanged (legalism).
But the law we are speaking about here is the standard of righteousness.
That does not change.
Now here is where everything becomes unavoidable.
If the law defines righteousness…
then removing the law removes the definition of righteousness.
And if righteousness has no definition…
then sin has no definition either.
But Scripture defines sin clearly:
“Sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3:4)
So the moment someone says “the law is done away with,” they have just removed the very thing that defines what sin is.
That’s not freedom.
That’s blindness.
Let’s bring this into plain reality, because this is where the argument becomes absurd.
If you remove laws against murder, does murder become good?
If you remove laws against theft, does stealing become righteous?
If you remove laws against adultery, does betrayal become acceptable?
Of course not.
The act didn’t change.
The standard did.
And that is exactly what this argument attempts to do—remove the standard so the behavior no longer has to be confronted.
You already live by this principle every day.
You don’t reject law—you reject being told which law defines you.
Now bring it back to Scripture again.
Paul says:
“By the law is the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20)
“I would not have known sin except through the law.” (Romans 7:7)
So the law does not create sin.
It exposes it.
It reveals it.
It removes the ability to pretend it is not there.
The law does not save you—but it ensures you cannot pretend you don’t need saving.
Now understand this clearly:
The law was never given as a means of salvation.
It was given as a standard of righteousness.
Salvation addresses your failure to meet that standard.
Grace deals with your guilt.
The law defines your conduct.
One does not eliminate the other.
And this is where many attempt to escape into the words of Messiah without actually listening to Him.
Yahusha said:
“Do not think that I came to abolish the law…” (Matthew 5:17)
That is not unclear.
That is direct.
So any argument that claims the law is abolished is already standing against the words of the very One they claim to follow.
Now we come to the real issue—this is where everything converges.
People do not reject the law because it is confusing.
They reject it because it confronts them.
It exposes them.
It demands change.
It removes self-definition.
It requires submission.
The law does not bend to you.
It reveals whether you are aligned—or not.
And that is why it is resisted.
Not because it is wrong.
But because rebellion does not want to be corrected.
Now we close the logic loop completely:
If there is no law → there is no sin
If there is no sin → there is nothing to forgive
If there is nothing to forgive → Messiah is unnecessary
That is where the “law is done away with” argument leads.
It does not honor the cross.
It empties it.
So let’s establish this foundation before anything else in this series:
The law is not the problem.
The law never was the problem.
The problem is rebellion against it.
Everything else we are going to address—
the cross, Paul’s writings, the new covenant, “not under the law,”
all of it rests on this foundation.
If this is wrong, everything else will be wrong.
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
