AGAINST THE LAW — PART 20: “NOT UNDER LAW BUT UNDER GRACE” — DOES GRACE REMOVE THE STANDARD OR RESTORE YOU TO IT?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Now we come to one of the most weaponized phrases in all of Scripture:
“You are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)
This is where people say:
“The law no longer applies.”
“We are free from commandments.”
“Grace replaced the law.”
That is the claim.
But Paul destroys that interpretation immediately—in the same chapter.
CONTEXT — DO NOT START IN THE MIDDLE
Romans 6 begins with a question:
“Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1)
Paul’s answer:
“Certainly not!”
Then again:
“Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?” (Romans 6:15)
Again:
“Certainly not!”
So whatever “not under law” means—
It does not mean freedom to sin.
That is already settled.
DEFINE “UNDER” — THE GREEK HYPO (hupo)
This is a critical layer that cannot be skipped.
The word “under” is hypo (hupo).
It means:
Under authority
Under control
Under jurisdiction
Under dominion
So this is not about:
Whether the law exists
It is about:
What authority you are under
DEFINE “UNDER LAW” CORRECTLY
“Under law” does not mean:
Under instruction
Under commandments
Under obedience
It means:
Under its penalty
Under its condemnation
Under its judgment
Because you have violated it.
DEFINE “UNDER GRACE” CORRECTLY
“Under grace” does not mean:
Freedom to do whatever you want
It means:
Under mercy
Under restoration
Under transformation
Under a new ruling authority
Grace is not the removal of structure.
It is the transfer of jurisdiction.
DOMINION LANGUAGE — THIS IS THE KEY
“For sin shall not have dominion over you…” (Romans 6:14)
That is the controlling idea.
This is about rule.
Structure:
Under law → sin dominates → condemnation rules
Under grace → sin loses dominion → righteousness begins to rule
So the issue is not law vs no law.
The issue is:
Who rules you.
YOU ARE NEVER AUTONOMOUS
“Do you not know… you are slaves of the one you obey…” (Romans 6:16)
There is no neutral ground.
You are either:
Slave to sin → leading to death
Slave to righteousness → leading to life
Grace does not remove authority.
It changes your master.
DEFINE SIN — THE LAW IS STILL ASSUMED
“Sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3:4)
If Paul says:
“Do not continue in sin…”
He is assuming:
The law still defines it.
Remove the law—
Sin disappears.
And Paul’s entire argument collapses.
GALATIANS CONFIRMS THE SAME MEANING
Paul uses the same language:
“Under the law” in Galatians 3
Meaning:
Under its curse
Under its penalty
“Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law…” (Galatians 3:13)
The curse is removed.
Not the law.
THE CURSE OF THE LAW — DEFINE IT
The law does not curse.
Violation does.
The curse is:
The penalty applied when the law is broken.
Messiah removes the penalty.
He does not remove the standard.
GRACE TRAINS YOU — NOT EXCUSES YOU
“For the grace of Elohim… teaches us to deny ungodliness…” (Titus 2:11–12)
This destroys the entire false argument.
Grace:
Teaches
Corrects
Trains
Aligns
Grace is not permission.
Grace is transformation.
OBEDIENCE FROM THE HEART — THE SHIFT
“You obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine…” (Romans 6:17)
That “form” already exists.
Grace does not create a new definition of righteousness.
It restores you into the one already given.
THE LAW STILL DEFINES RIGHTEOUSNESS
Paul never redefines righteousness.
He assumes its definition.
Because the law already defines it.
HEBREWS CONNECTION — CONSCIENCE CLEANSED
Hebrews 10:
Conscience cleansed
Access restored
But:
Righteousness is not redefined.
Grace restores relationship.
It does not alter the standard.
IF THE LAW IS REMOVED — GRACE HAS NO FUNCTION
No law → no sin
No sin → no guilt
No guilt → no need for grace
The existence of grace proves:
The law still stands.
THIS CONNECTS EVERYTHING WE HAVE BUILT
Part 14 — Not under law = not under condemnation
Part 16 — The Spirit transforms
Part 17 — Messiah is the goal
Part 18 — The law becomes liberty
Part 19 — Love fulfills the law
Now Part 20 locks it:
Grace removes the penalty—not the standard
BONDAGE VS LIBERTY — FINAL FORM
Under sin:
Sin rules
Flesh dominates
Death results
Under grace:
Sin broken
Spirit leads
Obedience flows
THE CONTRADICTION THEY CANNOT ESCAPE
If “under grace” means no law:
Then sin is irrelevant
Then obedience is unnecessary
Then righteousness is optional
Then grace becomes meaningless.
That system collapses immediately.
COMMON SENSE TEST — AGAIN
If a judge pardons your crime—
Does that remove the law?
No.
It removes your penalty.
IDENTITY SHIFT — THIS MUST BE UNDERSTOOD
You are not:
A criminal avoiding punishment
You are:
A son restored to alignment
And sons do not reject righteousness.
They walk in it.
FULL STRUCTURE — LOCK THIS IN
Law defines
Sin violates
Curse applies
Grace removes curse
Heart transforms
Spirit empowers
Obedience lives
FINAL HAMMER — NO ESCAPE
You are not under the law as a condemned violator.
You are under grace as a restored son.
Grace does not free you from obedience.
Grace frees you from what prevented you from obeying.
Grace does not remove the standard.
It restores you so you can walk in it.
And if you use grace to justify disobedience—
You are doing exactly what Paul rejected:
“Certainly not!”
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
