AGAINST THE LAW — PART 7: THE WRITTEN CODE — WHAT DID PAUL ACTUALLY MEAN?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Now we move into one of the most misused and misunderstood areas in all of Paul’s writings:
“We are no longer under the written code.”
“We serve in the Spirit, not in the letter.”
“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”
And from these statements, a sweeping conclusion is forced:
The written law is gone.
The commandments no longer apply.
Obedience to written instruction is “old covenant.”
Now we just follow the Spirit.
That sounds elevated.
It sounds spiritual.
It sounds like maturity.
But it is one of the most dangerous distortions in modern teaching.
Because once again—the issue is not what Paul wrote.
The issue is what people refuse to define.
So we are going to define it—fully, structurally, and without leaving any place to hide.
WHAT DOES THE TEXT ACTUALLY SAY?
“But now we are delivered from the law, having died to what held us, so that we should serve in newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.” (Romans 7:6)
This is where the argument begins.
But it cannot be understood in isolation.
Because if you isolate it—you will distort it.
Paul never teaches one line in contradiction to the rest of Scripture.
So this must be read in context of everything he says about the law.
DEFINE “OLDNESS OF THE LETTER” — THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE GO WRONG
“Oldness of the letter” does not mean:
The law is bad
The commandments are obsolete
The written word is irrelevant
That is not what Paul is saying.
“Oldness of the letter” refers to:
External command without internal transformation
Instruction without power
Knowledge without change
Obligation without desire
It is not describing the law.
It is describing the condition of the person encountering the law without the Spirit.
DEFINE “NEWNESS OF THE SPIRIT” — THIS IS THE CONTRAST
“Newness of the Spirit” does not mean:
No law
No commandments
No standard
It means:
Internal transformation
Empowered obedience
Alignment from within
This is exactly what was promised:
“I will put My law in their inward parts and write it on their hearts.” (Jeremiah 31:33)
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.” (Ezekiel 36:27)
So the contrast is not:
Law vs no law
It is:
External law vs internalized law
THE LAW NEVER CHANGED — THE LOCATION DID
Under the first covenant: The law was outside of you.
Under the renewed covenant: The law is within you.
Stone → heart
External → internal
Command → transformation
If the law was removed—
There would be nothing to write.
So the very existence of the Spirit-led life proves:
The law still stands.
THE LETTER KILLS — WHY?
“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (2 Corinthians 3:6)
This is one of the most abused phrases in Scripture.
The letter kills because:
It exposes sin
It reveals failure
It condemns the guilty
But it cannot transform.
So when a person encounters the law without transformation:
They see the standard
They see their failure
They stand condemned
That is “oldness of the letter.”
THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE — HOW?
The Spirit:
Writes the law on the heart
Produces desire for righteousness
Empowers obedience
Transforms the inner man
So now:
The same law that condemned you
Becomes the path you walk in
Not by force.
But by transformation.
PAUL DOES NOT REJECT THE LAW — HE AFFIRMS IT
“The law is holy, and the commandment holy, just, and good.” (Romans 7:12)
So Paul cannot be teaching:
The law is gone.
Because he explicitly affirms its goodness.
The issue is not the law.
The issue is the flesh.
THE LAW WITHOUT THE SPIRIT = CONDEMNATION
This must be understood clearly:
The law defines righteousness.
But it does not give you the power to live it.
So without the Spirit:
The law exposes
The flesh fails
The person is condemned
That is the “letter kills.”
THE LAW WITH THE SPIRIT = LIFE
Now everything changes.
Because with the Spirit:
The law is internal
The heart is transformed
The desire is aligned
The life begins to reflect righteousness
So the same law that once condemned—
Now becomes the pattern of life.
COLOSSIANS — PAUL REJECTS MAN-MADE SYSTEMS, NOT TORAH
Paul also says:
“Why… do you subject yourselves to regulations… according to the commandments and doctrines of men?” (Colossians 2:20–22)
This is critical.
Paul is not rejecting Yahuah’s law.
He is rejecting:
Man-made rules
Ascetic systems
Religious additions
False standards imposed as righteousness
So if you read Paul as rejecting the law—
You are confusing Torah with tradition.
THE “WRITTEN CODE” DOES NOT EQUAL TORAH
This must be clearly stated:
The written word of Yahuah defines righteousness.
But systems of accusation, legal condemnation, and man-made decrees are what Paul confronts in certain passages.
So not every reference to “written code” is a rejection of Torah.
Sometimes it is a rejection of how it is being misused.
THE SPIRIT NEVER LEADS CONTRARY TO THE LAW
This must be said plainly:
The Spirit does not lead you away from righteousness.
The Spirit leads you into it.
If what you call “Spirit-led” contradicts the law—
It is not the Spirit.
Because the Spirit is the author of the same standard.
THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT DOES NOT REPLACE THE LAW
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” (Galatians 5:22–23)
These are not alternatives to the law.
They are the expression of it.
Love fulfills the law—not replaces it.
The fruit of the Spirit is what the law looks like when it is lived out.
WITHOUT THE WRITTEN STANDARD — THERE IS NO DEFINITION
This is where the entire argument collapses.
If you remove the written word:
There is no defined sin
No objective righteousness
No fixed truth
Everything becomes:
Personal
Subjective
Emotional
That is not Scripture.
That is chaos.
MESSIAH OPERATED FROM WHAT WAS WRITTEN
When tempted, He said:
“It is written…”
Not:
“I feel led…”
Not:
“I think…”
He anchored everything in the written word.
So if Messiah Himself operated from what is written—
You do not graduate beyond it.
THE REAL ISSUE — AGAIN, AUTHORITY
People do not reject the “letter.”
They reject being defined by it.
Because once the written standard is removed—
They become the standard.
And that is what they want.
THE CONTRADICTION THEY CANNOT ESCAPE
If the written law is gone:
There is no sin
There is no conviction
There is no transformation
There is no need for the Spirit
That position destroys itself.
FINAL STRUCTURE — LOCK THIS IN
Law revealed
Sin exposed
Letter condemns
Flesh fails
Spirit transforms
Law internalized
Obedience expressed
FINAL HAMMER — NO ESCAPE
The letter without the Spirit condemns.
The Spirit without the letter deceives.
The truth is both:
Written and internal
Defined and lived
Revealed and transformed
The law is not gone.
It has been written within you.
The standard remains.
The difference is—you are no longer resisting it.
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
