AGAINST THE LAW — PART 10: THE COUNCIL IN ACTS 15 — DID THE APOSTLES REMOVE THE LAW?
Grace, Obedience, and the Truth Most Refuse to Face
The law was never the problem. Rebellion was.

Now we come to one of the most commonly used passages to argue that the law has been set aside:
Acts 15 — the Jerusalem Council.
This is where people say:
“The apostles removed the law for Gentiles.”
“They only gave four commandments.”
“The law was too heavy, so it was reduced.”
That is the claim.
But that is not what the text says.
And when you read it in full context—historical, covenantal, and scriptural—it does not weaken obedience.
It actually reinforces the correct order of covenant life.
WHAT WAS THE ISSUE IN ACTS 15?
The issue was never:
“Should Gentiles obey Yahuah?”
The issue was:
“Must Gentiles be circumcised and keep the law of Moses in order to be saved?” (Acts 15:1, 5)
That is the question under dispute.
Not obedience.
Salvation.
THE ERROR BEING CORRECTED
Certain men were teaching:
“Unless you are circumcised… you cannot be saved.” (Acts 15:1)
That is salvation by works.
That is adding a requirement for justification.
That is what the apostles reject.
And they make it explicit:
“We gave no such commandment.” (Acts 15:24)
So the council is not rejecting the law.
It is rejecting the idea that law-keeping is the basis of salvation.
HEART TRANSFORMATION — NOT EXTERNAL ENTRY
Peter clarifies:
“He made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” (Acts 15:9)
This is critical.
The entry point into the covenant is not ritual.
It is transformation.
Not external identity markers.
But internal change.
WHAT WAS THE “YOKE” THEY COULD NOT BEAR?
“Why do you test Elohim by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?” (Acts 15:10)
People assume:
“The law is the burden.”
But that is not what Peter is saying.
The burden was:
Trying to be justified by perfect law-keeping.
Trying to earn righteousness through obedience.
That is the yoke.
Not the law itself.
THE PROPHETIC CONTEXT — THIS IS ABOUT RESTORATION
James anchors the entire decision in prophecy:
“I will rebuild the fallen tent of David… so that the rest of mankind may seek Yahuah…” (Acts 15:16–17; Amos 9:11–12)
This is not random.
This is restoration language.
The covenant structure is being rebuilt.
And the nations are being brought into it.
Not outside of it.
WHAT DID THEY ACTUALLY DECIDE?
They gave four immediate instructions:
Abstain from idolatry
Abstain from sexual immorality
Abstain from things strangled
Abstain from blood (Acts 15:20)
And this is where the misunderstanding happens.
People say:
“Only these four commands remain.”
But the text never says “only.”
That word is added.
Not written.
WHY THESE FOUR — GO DEEPER
These four commands come directly from Torah (Leviticus 17–18).
They are tied to:
Idolatrous worship systems
Temple practices
Table fellowship issues
Immediate separation from pagan life
These were urgent.
These were foundational.
These were required for:
Entering covenant life
Living in community with believers
They were not the totality of righteousness.
They were the starting point.
TABLE FELLOWSHIP — A PRACTICAL NECESSITY
These instructions allowed Jewish and Gentile believers to:
Eat together
Live together
Worship together
Without violating core covenant boundaries.
This was not theoretical.
This was practical.
THE VERSE THAT DESTROYS THE “FOUR ONLY” ARGUMENT
“For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” (Acts 15:21)
This is the key.
It assumes:
Gentiles will hear Torah
Gentiles will learn
Gentiles will grow
The expectation was never:
“Stay at four commands.”
The expectation was:
“Start here—and continue learning.”
THIS IS ENTRY POINT — NOT FINAL INSTRUCTION
Acts 15 answers:
How do Gentiles come into the faith?
Answer:
By grace, through faith—not by law-keeping.
It does not answer:
What does a fully formed covenant life look like?
That is answered everywhere else in Scripture.
PAUL CONTINUES TEACHING OBEDIENCE AFTER ACTS 15
Paul says:
“The law is holy…” (Romans 7:12)
“We establish the law…” (Romans 3:31)
And Acts records:
Paul himself walking orderly and keeping the law (Acts 21:24)
So if Acts 15 removed the law—
Paul contradicts it immediately.
That is not possible.
IF ACTS 15 REMOVED THE LAW — THE SYSTEM COLLAPSES
If only four commands remain:
Murder is not addressed
Theft is not addressed
Lying is not addressed
That is absurd.
So the argument collapses under its own weight.
THE REAL ISSUE — ORDER, NOT REMOVAL
Acts 15 establishes the correct order:
You do not enter by obedience.
You enter by grace.
But once you are in—
You grow into obedience.
THE GENTILES WERE NOT LEFT LAWLESS
They were:
Brought near (Ephesians 2:13)
Grafted in (Romans 11)
Included in covenant structure
Not given a separate system.
THE CONTRADICTION THEY CANNOT ESCAPE
If Acts 15 removed the law:
There is no defined sin
There is no objective righteousness
There is no need for transformation
That contradicts everything else written.
COMMON SENSE TEST — AGAIN
If someone enters a household—
Do you give them everything immediately?
Or do you give them what is necessary first—
Then teach them how to live fully within it?
Acts 15 is the beginning.
Not the end.
FULL STRUCTURE — LOCK THIS IN
Called by grace
Cleansed by faith
Separated from idolatry
Brought into covenant
Taught Torah
Grown into obedience
Life transformed
FINAL HAMMER — NO ESCAPE
Acts 15 did not remove the law.
It removed the lie that you are saved by it.
It established the proper order:
Grace first.
Obedience follows.
The four instructions were not the full standard.
They were the entry point.
Because the expectation was never lawlessness—
It was growth into righteousness.
You don’t remove sin by removing the standard—you expose it and deal with it.
