Exodus 20:15 states plainly:
“You shall not steal.”
Four words. No explanation. No qualifiers. No expansion in the line itself.
But like every commandment, its brevity is not simplicity—it is foundation.
Most reduce this commandment to: “Don’t take what isn’t yours.”
That’s true—but that is only the surface.
This commandment is about:
ownership
stewardship
trust
labor
justice
boundaries
contentment
covenant order
and the recognition that what a person has is not random—it is assigned, measured, and permitted by Yahuah
To steal is not just to take property.
It is to violate:
trust
boundary
order
and ultimately, the authority of Yahuah over distribution, provision, and increase
THE HEBRAIC FOUNDATION — WHAT DOES “STEAL” MEAN?
The Hebrew word is גָּנַב (ganav)
This word carries the meaning of:
taking secretly
carrying away
deceiving in order to gain
removing what belongs to another without right
It includes:
theft
kidnapping (Exodus 21:16 uses ganav)
fraud
deception for gain
This commandment is not limited to breaking into a house.
It includes:
hidden taking
dishonest gain
manipulation
exploitation
unjust acquisition
So the eighth commandment is broader than most admit.
THIS COMMANDMENT PROTECTS ORDER — NOT JUST PROPERTY
Modern thinking focuses on ownership as an individual right.
Scripture roots ownership in something deeper: Yahuah is the source of all provision.
Deuteronomy 8:18 —
“It is He who gives you power to get wealth…”
Psalm 24:1 —
“The earth is Yahuah’s, and all its fullness…”
That means:
what you have is not ultimately yours by origin
it is entrusted, measured, and permitted
So when you steal, you are not just taking from a man.
You are:
rejecting Yahuah’s distribution
asserting your own authority over provision
stepping outside covenant order
This commandment therefore protects divine order expressed in human stewardship.
STEALING IS ROOTED IN REJECTION OF TRUST
At the heart of theft is a simple statement:
“I will take what I want instead of trusting what I’ve been given.”
That reveals:
lack of trust in Yahuah
dissatisfaction
entitlement
coveting
impatience
rebellion against limits
So stealing is not just an external act—it is a heart posture.
It says:
“I do not accept what Yahuah has allowed or assigned—I will take more.”
THE CONNECTION TO THE TENTH COMMANDMENT
This commandment cannot be separated from coveting.
The order matters:
You covet → then you take.
Exodus 20:17 (coveting) feeds directly into Exodus 20:15 (stealing).
The process is:
desire what is not yours
dwell on it
justify it
pursue it
take it
So the eighth commandment deals with the outward act, while the tenth exposes the inward root.
You cannot teach one without the other.
STEALING TAKES MANY FORMS — NOT JUST OBVIOUS ONES
If we ask what belongs here that is often missing, this must be expanded:
Stealing includes:
1. Direct theft
Taking property, money, or goods unlawfully
2. Fraud and deception
Proverbs 11:1 — “Dishonest scales are an abomination…”
3. Wage exploitation
Leviticus 19:13 — “You shall not defraud your neighbor… the wages… shall not remain with you all night”
James 5:4 — withheld wages cry out
4. Kidnapping / human trafficking
Exodus 21:16 — ganav used directly
5. Dishonest business practices
Micah 6:11 — false weights
6. Taking advantage of the vulnerable
Proverbs 22:22–23
7. Withholding what is owed
Not giving what is rightfully due
8. Plagiarism / intellectual theft (modern application)
Taking what another produced and claiming it
9. Time theft
Being paid but not working honestly
10. Spiritual theft
False teachers exploiting people for gain (2 Peter 2:3)
So if someone thinks they have never stolen, they likely have not understood the commandment.
THIS COMMANDMENT PROTECTS TRUST IN COMMUNITY
Society cannot function without trust.
If theft becomes normal:
agreements collapse
commerce fails
relationships fracture
suspicion replaces trust
justice must constantly intervene
That is why this commandment is foundational.
It protects:
agreements
exchange
fairness
peace
stability
Without it, everything becomes unstable.
THE COMMANDMENT ESTABLISHES RESPONSIBILITY AND RESTITUTION
Torah does not stop at “don’t steal.”
It establishes consequences.
Exodus 22 outlines:
restitution
repayment
restoration
If a man steals, he does not simply say “sorry.”
He repays:
what was taken
often multiplied
Why?
Because theft damages more than the object—it damages trust and order.
So restoration must exceed loss.
STEALING IS A FORM OF INJUSTICE
Isaiah 61:8 — “I, Yahuah, love justice; I hate robbery…”
Theft is not neutral—it is injustice.
It takes:
without right
without permission
without covenant alignment
And replaces justice with:
selfish gain
imbalance
exploitation
So this commandment is directly tied to justice.
THE HEART ISSUE — CONTENTMENT VS ENTITLEMENT
The deeper layer of this commandment is this:
Do you accept what you have been given?
Or do you believe:
you deserve more
you should have what others have
you can take it if you can get away with it
Contentment is covenant alignment.
1 Timothy 6:6 — “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
Stealing is rooted in:
dissatisfaction
comparison
envy
greed
So this commandment exposes your relationship with provision.
ZACCHAEUS — RESTORATION OF THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT
Luke 19 gives a powerful example.
Zacchaeus had gained wealth unjustly.
When he encountered Yahusha, what happened?
He said: “If I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”
That is Torah.
Repentance did not stop at words.
It produced:
restitution
correction
alignment
That is the true restoration of the eighth commandment.
THIS COMMANDMENT ALSO PROTECTS YOUR OWN SOUL
Proverbs 1:19 — greed takes away the life of its owner
Stealing does not just harm others—it corrupts the one who does it.
It trains the heart in:
dishonesty
deception
self-justification
entitlement
And over time, that destroys integrity.
THE POSITIVE SIDE — WHAT SHOULD BE HERE
This commandment is not just: “Do not steal.”
It is:
work honestly (Ephesians 4:28)
provide rightly
give generously
respect boundaries
operate with integrity
deal truthfully
steward what is entrusted
honor others’ property
build, not take
Ephesians 4:28 says:
“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor… that he may have something to give…”
That is the full transformation:
from taking → to producing
from selfishness → to generosity
KEY THEMATIC INSIGHTS
Ownership Begins with Yahuah
All provision originates with Him; theft rejects His authority over distribution.
Stealing Is Rebellion Against Order
It violates boundaries, justice, and trust.
The Root Is Coveting
The heart desires what is not given, then acts.
The Commandment Protects Community Stability
Without it, trust collapses.
Restitution Is Required
True repentance restores what was taken.
Contentment Is the Antidote
A satisfied heart does not steal.
The Goal Is Integrity and Generosity
Not merely avoiding theft, but becoming trustworthy stewards.
WHAT THIS COMMANDMENT DESTROYS
This commandment destroys:
the lie that “no one is hurt”
the lie that “if you can get away with it, it’s fine”
the lie that provision is random
the lie that taking is justified by desire
the lie that small theft is insignificant
the lie that dishonest gain is success
FINAL DECLARATION
The eighth commandment is not: “Don’t shoplift.”
It is:
Do not take what is not yours.
Do not violate what Yahuah has assigned.
Do not replace trust with deception.
Do not exchange integrity for gain.
Do not exploit, manipulate, or deceive.
Do not let coveting become action.
Honor boundaries.
Walk in honesty.
Work with your hands.
Provide rightly.
Give generously.
Live in contentment under the provision of Yahuah.
Because stealing is not just taking from a man.
It is stepping outside covenant order and declaring independence from the One who gives, measures, and entrusts all things.
