INTRODUCTION
One of the most fascinating patterns in creation occurs twice each year when the sun crosses the celestial equator. This moment is known as the equinox, and it marks a turning point in the seasonal cycle of the earth.
In recent years the equinox has been increasingly discussed among those studying the biblical calendar. Some people treat it as a critical indicator of the seasonal transition into spring. Others mistakenly elevate it as the governing authority for determining the biblical New Year.
Both views cannot be correct.
To understand the issue clearly we must return to the principle that governs all sound biblical study: Scripture defines authority, while creation provides witnesses.
The heavens testify.
The earth confirms.
But the Torah establishes the command.
When these roles are confused, the calendar drifts away from the instructions Yahuah actually gave.
To understand the subject correctly we must examine two questions:
What is the vernal equinox and what role does it play in creation?
Why does Scripture never assign the equinox authority over the biblical calendar?
PART 1
THE VERNAL EQUINOX — A CREATION MARKER
The word equinox comes from Latin and simply means equal night. It describes the moment when the sun crosses the earth’s equatorial plane so that neither hemisphere tilts toward or away from the sun.
At that moment several observable things occur:
• Daylight and darkness are nearly equal worldwide.
• The sun rises very near due east and sets very near due west.
• The northern hemisphere begins transitioning into the spring agricultural season.
Astronomically, the equinox occurs when the sun crosses what astronomers call the celestial equator, the imaginary line extending outward from Earth’s equator into space.
For 2026 the vernal equinox occurs on:
March 20, 2026
14:46 UTC
4:46 PM Jerusalem time
At that moment the earth’s seasonal cycle crosses the threshold from winter toward spring in the northern hemisphere.
Long before telescopes or modern astronomy existed, ancient observers recognized these seasonal turning points simply by watching the sun and the shadows it cast on the earth. The changing height of the sun in the sky, the direction of sunrise and sunset, and the lengthening of daylight revealed that the year was progressing through predictable patterns.
This is exactly what Genesis tells us.
Genesis 1:14 says:
“Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”
The Hebrew word translated seasons is moedim, the same word used throughout Torah for appointed times.
The heavens therefore function as a visible clock that reveals the progression of the year.
The equinox is one of the markers within that system.
When the sun crosses the equator, the earth has clearly entered the spring agricultural window. Temperatures rise, vegetation begins to emerge, and the agricultural cycle restarts.
Farmers throughout history have recognized this seasonal turning point. The equinox signals that the land is transitioning toward the time when crops begin to mature.
But here is the critical distinction.
The equinox may indicate the season — but Scripture never assigns it authority over the calendar.
That authority is given somewhere else entirely.
PART 2
WHY THE EQUINOX DOES NOT GOVERN THE BIBLICAL CALENDAR
The Torah does not determine the New Year by the equinox.
It determines the New Year by the month of Aviv.
Exodus 12:2 establishes the beginning of the year when Yahuah says:
“This month shall be unto you the beginning of months.”
Deuteronomy 16:1 clarifies the requirement:
“Observe the month of Aviv and keep the Passover unto Yahuah your Elohim.”
The Hebrew word Aviv refers to the stage of barley development when the grain has formed in the ear but is not yet fully hardened.
This is not symbolic language.
It is agricultural.
The month of Aviv is confirmed when the barley in the land has reached the stage necessary to offer the firstfruits during Unleavened Bread.
That is why the biblical calendar operates with two primary witnesses:
The moon establishes the months.
The barley confirms the year.
The equinox may help observers recognize that spring is approaching, but it does not determine when the New Year begins.
If the barley is not yet Aviv, the year has not begun.
This agricultural anchor prevents the calendar from drifting away from the harvest cycle that Torah requires.
Passover must occur when the barley is ready for the wave offering of Firstfruits during Unleavened Bread. If the calendar drifts earlier than the barley harvest, the command cannot be fulfilled.
The barley therefore functions as the final verification.
This is why barley observation in the land remains essential for determining the beginning of the biblical year.
The equinox signals the season.
The moon structures the months.
But the barley in the land confirms the year.
When these roles are kept in their proper order, the calendar remains aligned with both creation and Torah.
CONCLUSION
The vernal equinox is a remarkable creation marker. It demonstrates the precision of the order Yahuah established in the heavens when He set the lights in the firmament to mark the progression of time.
But while the equinox signals the turning of the season, Scripture never gives it authority over the calendar.
The biblical calendar is governed by the instructions given in Torah.
The moon establishes the months.
The barley confirms the year.
And the appointed times unfold exactly where Yahuah placed them.
Creation provides witnesses.
Torah provides the command.
And when those two are understood together, the appointed times remain anchored exactly where they belong.
PART 3
OBSERVING THE EQUINOX IN CREATION — VERIFIABLE MARKERS ANYONE CAN SEE
Fun Facts, Simple Tests, and Seasonal Witnesses Built Into Creation
One of the remarkable things about the equinox is that it is not hidden behind complicated astronomy or scientific instruments. The turning of the season can be observed directly through creation itself. Anyone willing to watch the sky, observe the land, and pay attention to the movement of shadows can see the transition happening.
Genesis 1:14 explains why this is possible. Yahuah placed the lights in the heavens “for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years.” The Hebrew word translated seasons is moedim, the same word used throughout Scripture for the appointed times. The heavens function as a visible clock revealing the progression of the year.
The equinox is one of those visible markers.
For 2026, the vernal equinox occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward. At that moment the seasonal cycle begins shifting toward spring in the northern hemisphere.
The exact timing for this event is:
UTC (Universal Time)
March 20, 2026 — 14:46
Jerusalem (Israel Standard Time)
March 20, 2026 — 4:46 PM
United States Time Zones
Eastern Time
March 20, 2026 — 10:46 AM
Central Time
March 20, 2026 — 9:46 AM
Mountain Time
March 20, 2026 — 8:46 AM
Pacific Time
March 20, 2026 — 7:46 AM
At that moment the sun sits directly above the earth’s equator. From that point forward the northern hemisphere receives progressively more daylight each day as the earth moves toward the summer season.
Several observable patterns appear during this time.
SUNRISE AND SUNSET ALIGNMENT
One of the easiest indicators of the equinox is the direction of sunrise and sunset.
During winter the sun rises south of east.
During summer it rises north of east.
But near the equinox the rising point passes very close to due east and the setting point passes very close to due west.
Observers who watch the horizon throughout the year can see the sunrise location slowly sliding along the horizon. It moves southward after the summer solstice and northward after the winter solstice. The equinox marks the midpoint of that movement.
This happens because the earth is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees on its axis. As the earth travels around the sun, that tilt causes the sun’s apparent path in the sky to move north and south.
DAY AND NIGHT BECOME NEARLY EQUAL
The word equinox literally means “equal night.” Around this time most locations on earth experience very close to twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness.
Because sunlight bends slightly in the atmosphere and because sunrise is measured when the top edge of the sun becomes visible, daylight is usually a few minutes longer than darkness. Even so, the balance becomes very close around the equinox.
THE SUN CROSSES THE CELESTIAL EQUATOR
Astronomically, the equinox occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator, which is the imaginary extension of the earth’s equator projected into space.
When the sun crosses that line it moves from the southern half of the sky into the northern half. This marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere.
FUN FACT YOU CAN TEST YOURSELF
(Something the children can do and learn)
THE SHADOW STICK EXPERIMENT
One of the oldest observational tools ever used by humanity is the simple vertical stick.
To try this experiment, place a straight stick vertically in level ground so that it stands straight up and down.
This is actually been used for navigation for thousands of years. And it works virtually year round. So if you’re lost and you need to determine direction you can do this in a matter of a few moments, even in the wilderness. In the daytime…..
Observe the shadow cast by the stick and mark the point where the tip of the shadow touches the ground.
Wait about ten to fifteen minutes.
Mark the new position of the shadow tip.
Now draw a straight line between those two marks.
That line will run very close to a true east–west direction.
The reason this works is because the earth rotates about fifteen degrees every hour. As the earth rotates, the sun appears to move across the sky from east to west. Because of that movement, the shadow cast by the stick moves continuously.
By marking two shadow positions separated by time, you are tracing the path of the sun across the sky.
If you draw a line perpendicular to the east–west line you just created, that perpendicular line will indicate the north–south direction.
Yes, the shadow will move constantly because the earth itself is rotating. That constant motion is exactly what allows the experiment to reveal direction.
Ancient observers used this simple method to determine directions, track the movement of the sun, and even measure the size of the earth long before modern instruments existed.
THE FASTEST SUNRISE SHIFT OF THE YEAR
Another interesting observation happens near the equinox.
The sunrise position moves along the horizon faster during this time than at any other point in the year.
Near the solstices the sunrise location changes very slowly from day to day. But near the equinox the sunrise position shifts noticeably each morning.
Someone who watches the sunrise for several consecutive days during this time will see the rising point move steadily northward along the horizon.
HOW THE ANCIENT HEBREWS COULD RECOGNIZE SPRING WITHOUT ASTRONOMY
One of the most powerful implications of this system is that the biblical calendar never required complex calculations.
Ancient Israel did not need telescopes or astronomical charts to know when spring had arrived.
They could see it.
They could observe the lengthening daylight.
They could see the seasonal changes in the land.
They could watch the agricultural cycle beginning again.
Most importantly, they could inspect the barley.
The stage of the barley crop was the decisive factor for determining the month of Aviv. When the barley reached the stage necessary for the firstfruits offering, the new year could begin.
This means the biblical calendar was intentionally designed so that ordinary people living in the land could verify it through direct observation.
WHY THE BARLEY NATURALLY FOLLOWS THE EQUINOX WINDOW
There is also a natural relationship between the equinox and the barley harvest.
The equinox signals the seasonal turning point toward spring. Once the northern hemisphere begins receiving increased sunlight, temperatures gradually rise and crops begin maturing.
Barley, being one of the earliest ripening grains in the region of Israel, reaches the Aviv stage shortly after this seasonal transition.
This does not mean the equinox determines the biblical year. Instead, the equinox simply marks the seasonal window in which the barley harvest normally develops.
The barley remains the authority.
The equinox is only a witness that the earth has entered the spring growing season.
WHY THIS MATTERS
All of these observations reveal something remarkable about the design of creation.
The heavens reveal the seasonal cycle.
The sun signals the turning of the year.
The earth responds with new life and agricultural growth.
But Scripture still establishes the final authority clearly.
The equinox signals the season.
The moon establishes the months.
The barley in the land confirms the year.
Creation provides witnesses.
Torah provides the command.
And when those remain in their proper order, the appointed times remain exactly where Yahuah placed them.
THE LAND RESPONDS TO THE SEASON
Perhaps the most obvious witness of all is the condition of the land itself.
As the earth transitions into spring:
temperatures begin rising
trees begin budding
flowers begin emerging
birds migrate north
agricultural cycles restart
These seasonal changes are exactly the conditions that lead to the maturation of barley in the land.
This is where the biblical calendar connects directly to creation.
WHY THIS MATTERS
All of these observations demonstrate something important.
The heavens reveal the seasonal cycle.
The sun signals the transition toward spring.
The earth responds with new life and agricultural growth.
But Scripture still establishes the final authority clearly.
The equinox signals the season.
The moon establishes the months.
The barley confirms the year.
